Current situation

Poverty is widespread in Bangladesh, one of the world’s most densely populated countries. Around 47 million Bangladeshis live below the poverty line (1).

The low-lying country is very fertile but is also especially prone to natural disasters – particularly flooding and cyclones. Poor Bangladeshi communities are often the hardest hit by such disasters and by other effects of climate change.
