Dhaka, Bangladesh, 20 July 2026 – Islamic Relief Bangladesh (IRB) has launched a rapid emergency response to support communities devastated by severe flooding across Banshkhali, Satkania, and Chandanaish upazilas in Chattogram. With approximately 1.7 million people impacted across the region, IRB mobilised assistance within 72 hours of the disaster. The organisation has allocated BDT 2.47 crore to provide urgent humanitarian aid to nearly 9,000 people across 2,000 households.
The emergency response package features multipurpose cash grants of BDT 8,000 per household, alongside the distribution of hygiene and dignity kits and protection awareness messaging. This approach empowers families to address their most pressing needs while maintaining dignity and choice. Priority for this assistance is given to the most vulnerable, including older people, persons with disabilities, widows, pregnant and lactating women, ethnic minority communities, and women-headed households.
Islamic Relief teams acted quickly to conduct assessments, consult with community members, and coordinate directly with local government authorities. These partnerships ensure that the response remains transparent, accountable, and effectively targeted toward the hardest-hit families, especially those in remote areas.

While floodwaters are receding, the scale of the crisis remains significant. Despite initial interventions, vast unmet needs persist as thousands of families struggle with destroyed or damaged homes, lost income, and severely disrupted livelihoods. There is an urgent requirement for additional resources to address critical gaps in shelter, where many families require support to repair or rebuild homes rendered unsafe by the floods.
Furthermore, restoring access to safe drinking water and functional sanitation facilities remains essential to prevent the spread of waterborne diseases. Finally, with many households’ having lost livestock, crops, and productive assets, there is a pressing need for comprehensive livelihood support to prevent long-term economic hardship and strengthen community resilience.
