Humanitarian and Resilience
Bangladesh, a densely populated and low-lying deltaic country, faces significant vulnerability to recurring natural disasters, including floods, cyclones, droughts, landslides, and earthquakes. These risks are exacerbated by climate change and human-driven factors such as deforestation and unplanned urbanisation. Ranked among the top five countries globally for climate-related economic risks (UNDP), these disasters disproportionately affect marginalised communities, particularly in coastal and flood-prone regions, perpetuating poverty and hindering development progress.
Islamic Relief Bangladesh (IRB) responds to these complex challenges through its Humanitarian and Resilience (H&R) Programme, which follows the strategic framework of Humanitarian Response Linking Preparedness and Resilience (HRPR) aligning with humanitarian-development-peace. This approach bridges emergency relief with long-term recovery, preparedness, and resilience-building efforts, ensuring timely, inclusive, and dignified support for vulnerable communities. Our programme integrates emergency response, early recovery, rehabilitation, climate-informed anticipatory actions, inclusive WASH services, and seasonal aid to save lives, livelihoods, and reduce suffering.
Key Focus Areas:
-
- Humanitarian Response: IRB responds within 72 hours to small- and medium-scale emergencies, providing lifesaving aid such as food, non-food items (NFIs), cash, shelter, and protection, while continuing support for displaced and vulnerable populations.
- Early Recovery & Rehabilitation: We restore essential services such as WASH, shelter, and livelihoods—helping communities rebuild and regain stability after a disaster.
- Anticipatory Action/Disaster Preparedness: We focus on proactively mitigating the impact of disasters by taking pre-emptive action before a predicted event occurs to reduce loss and damage and suffering. Our approach incorporates forecast-based triggers, pre-agreed actions, and climate risk management to strengthen anticipatory action.
- WASH: We improve access to safe, gender-inclusive water, sanitation, and hygiene facilities, promoting healthy practices in crisis-affected areas.
- Shelter: We advocate for inclusive, disaster-resilient, and climate-adaptive shelter solutions that provide protection and dignity for displaced families.
- Seasonal Support: Through initiatives like winterisation kits, Qurbani meat distribution, Eid gifts, and Aqiqah and food and non-food items distribution, we address seasonal vulnerabilities, promote inclusion, and restore dignity during cultural and religious celebrations.
- Advocacy: We work to influence humanitarian policies, promote equity, and ensure that marginalised voices are heard in governance and decision-making processes.
- Nexus Programme: IRB integrates development perspectives into its humanitarian programming by addressing both immediate relief and long-term resilience. Our humanitarian programme also considers to tackle the root causes of vulnerability, such as poverty and limited access to basic services, thereby reducing the impact of future crises.
